The function of the nylon insert locknut is to resist
loosening. An all metal locknut depends on high pressure metal-to-metal
contact to provide locking action. Vibration or re-installation
may cause rapid loss of effectiveness as contacts are worn. With
a nylon insert locknut, the nylon flows between the threads until
a uniform pressure is exerted against the thread crests. The nylon
is also compressed between the flanks, creating dual action -
absorbing vibration as well as resisting rotation. The locking
quality is only on e factor to consider in a locknut. Mechanical
strength, thermal properties, resistance to chemicals, elastic
recovery and durability all contribute to the locknut's characteristics.
MECHANICAL STRENGTH Nylon has high
tensile strength, hardness, impact strength, compression, stiffness
and rigidity. The low friction coupled with high tensile creates
excellent abrasion resistance.
THERMAL PROPERTIES Most nylon insert
locknuts are manufactured from Zytel 101 which has an effective
temperature range up to 250 ° F. Zytel 103 has a higher effective
range to 350 ° F and can be special ordered for your higher
heat applications. The insert is available in a wide range of
colors: white, green, yellow, red, orange, purple and blue to
name a few. The coloring does not add or take away from the performance
and is mainly used to identify the manufacturer. Nylon is the
most resistant thermo-=plastic resin today. As temperatures increase,
it will retain resistance to softening until the maximum degree
is reached at which point it melts immediately. On the other hand,
with a decrease in temperature, the tensile strength increases
and it will have excellent flexibility allowing locking action
to continue even in sub-zero temperatures.
CHEMICAL RESISTANCE Nylon is highly
resistant to many oils, diluted mineral oils, organic acids, alkalies,
solvents and salt solutions. A list of these are available from
your salesperson.
ELASTIC RECOVERY Nylon will try
to return to its original shape after the mating thread has been
removed therefore the nut can be reused many times. The exact
reusability depends on thread roughness, minimum breakaway torque
acceptability and other factors.
DURABILITY Zytel was developed
in 1944 by Dupont. At that time a sample test was made which proved
a nylon insert locknut can properly function for at least 30 years.
Through on-going tests, it's been proven that under ideal conditions
a locknut will continue to function properly long past its life
expectancy.
Thin pattern locknuts are approximately 25% thinner
than regular pattern locknuts. The nylon insert coloring may vary
as may the number of stake marks, according to the manufacturer's
option. Miniature patterns are also available. Ask your salesperson
for these dimensions.
