Hardened ground production dowel pins have ground
cylindrical sides at both ends making them rounded enough to be
pressed into drive-fit holes. They are used in high production
applications for doweling hardened tool and machine components,
or to serve as a stop, guide or load-bearing pin. Made of carbon
or alloy steels which are heat treat hardened by quenching in
oil, these pins may be case hardened (surface hardness Rockwell
C60 min and core hardness between C47-C58) or may be through hardened
(Rockwell C50-C58) at manufacturer's option when parts are 1/8" diameter or smaller. The surface must always have a higher Rockwell
reading than the core. Dowel pins are also available in non-magnetic
304 stainless steel or heat-treated 416 stainless steel. They
are furnished plain, passivated, black oxide or cadmium plated.
