Socket head cap screws shall have a smooth chamfered
surface with smooth or knurled cylindrical sides and a flat bearing
surface. Heads may be drilled for lockwire when requested by the
purchaser. Sockets are available with 1 hole through, 2 holes
through and 3 holes through. "One hole through:" is
recognized to mean one hole drilled through to the other side;
actually being a total of two holes 180 ° apart. Sockets with
#6 diameters and smaller are recommended to have only one hole
drilled through due to their small head size. Diameters #8 and
larger must have drill holes which stay within the flat of the
hex drive and shall not break through the corners. When multiple
holes are drilled, they intersect at 60 ° angles. Commercial
quality sockets may have burrs and either chamfered or broken
edged holes. They must be able to accept a hex key which is dimensionally
correct. Aircraft socket cap screws must meet stricter criteria
and therefore a commercial socket must not be substituted for
aircraft use.
